In Her Shoes: Bo Carney

We can’t deny the positive power of law of attraction. This sums-up our journey in this special trade and it’s a privilege we celebrate, to work alongside like minds and people we admire in our day-to-day. This includes the incredible Bo Carney from Mohawk General Store.

It’s no accident that our paths crossed many moons ago and that you can find select St. Agni styles available in her LA boutique. Independent, chic and tuned-in, Bo has created her own happy life in the rag trade that she appreciates everyday and lovingly shares with her husband and son.
We spoke to Bo recently to peek inside her life and find out what it’s like being In Her Shoes…

Please describe yourself in three words…
Happy, chill, aspiring…

Where are you from, and how did you come to be living life as you know it?
Seoul, South Korea. There were many twists and turns on the journey to where I am now. Each twist that took me farther from what I really wanted was actually an opportunity for me to dig deep and learn more about myself and my dreams and then figure out how to make it all happen.

In your own words, please tell us what you do?
I own and buy for our stores and also design our own brand Smockwith my husband Kevin.

Where did the inspiration for Mohawk General Store and Smockcome from?
We didn't want to limit our store to only certain categories because so many different things inspired us: vintage, art, books, music, found objects etc. We thought of everything we loved as being related somehow, and in our stores they coexist in one space. We started our original tiny Mohawk store on Mohawk St in Echo Park just filling it with everything that we found inspiring around us. Local designers, flea market finds, our own vintage pieces, old art books, art and jewellery made by friends… it all ballooned from there.

Smockcame about from the need for certain simple garments that Kevin and I found to be missing in our store offering. We both appreciate simple, chic, functional clothes and this is our interpretation of a modern essential wardrobe. Many pieces are based on old vintage and military pieces in our wardrobe that have stood the test of time. We still try to wear them even though they are literally falling apart!

Which element of your work do you thrive off the most?
Connecting with clients, providing them with joy and inspiration.

What would you be doing/ where would you be in an alternate life?
I would be a sculptor living in the remote countryside of Italy.

What do you like to do for fun?
Watch movies in the theatre, go to flea markets and take my boy somewhere he's never been before.

What is one thing you do consistently to take care of yourself?
Meditate for 20 minutes and then journal for 3 pages.

What does beauty look like to you?
Confidence that comes from respecting and taking care of yourself inside and out.

What are three things that are inspiring you right now?
Being a mom and witnessing the experience of pure joy, love, and innocence through my baby. I’m inspired by people who know how to be genuinely happy and also by nature.

Do you have any goals or plans for yourself in the pipeline that you can share with us?
I am planning our first trip to Europe as a family next year!

If you could give your younger self any advice based on everything you know now, what would it be?
Everything is going to be all right even when it looks like the complete opposite! Your dreams will eventually come true - even if you have no clue as to how you are going do it - so never lose faith and try to enjoy all the bumps in the road!

What is happiness to you?
Being able to fall asleep in utter peace knowing that you lived your best day and waking up with total enthusiasm to do all the great things you know are in store for you.
