Introducing UKIYO "The Floating World" SS20

Launching Tuesday 30th June 2020

Our upcoming collection, UKIYO, explores the symbiotic relationship between function and shape.

Taking cues from the utilitarianism of Japanese workwear and the sculptural articulations of Isamu Noguchi, UKIYO “The Floating World” is an ode to the timeless appeal of organic forms. Combining the brute beauty of practicality with effeminate accents and exaggerated silhouettes, each piece seeks to harmonise the feminine and masculine elements naturally occurring in nature whilst gesturing towards a philosophy of understated simplicity.

Crafted from natural fibres, our latest collection reflects a commitment to sustainable practices that seek to honour and protect the landscapes from which we draw our inspiration. Our innovative collection of hemp, bamboo, raw silk and linen honours the sensual aspects of dressing oneself, namely, the interplay between texture and touch and was crafted for the woman that dresses with all five senses in mind.

As we begin to realign ourselves to the rhythms of everyday life outside the home, there are certain comforts we will continue to carry with us as reminders of what we have learnt.

UKIYO is centred around this notion of transition — from masculine to feminine, internal to external, physical to immaterial.  With an attitude of hope, we look towards a future where 'slowness' is appreciated as a strength rather than a weakness, as we transition to a life lived with ever greater consideration for the important things in life.

Split into two acts, UKIYO Part I introduces you to “the floating world”; detached from the bothers of life, an ode to the realms of organic beauty. Pieces like the Yume Dress and Hiromi Shorts are true to this collection’s Japanese influence, both featuring thick waist-ties and structural tailoring. The Ranger Short and Osamu Jumpsuit offer a modern adaptation of practical workwear, while the Hoshi Dress and Ruri Wrap Knit explore the playful nature of femininity.

This collection also sees the introduction of some pioneering footwear, including the Miho Slide, Nikko Sandal, Jiro Sandal and Asami Sandal, as well the inclusion of a new colour-way, Ecru. The Colette Slingback and Clemente Boot continue into UKIYO in Ecru, both timeless styles that would make a great addition to any staple wardrobe.

UKIYO Part I also presents two new woven accessories; the Bagu Woven Tote and Ama Woven Clutch, that have been designed to pair with any piece from the collection.

Undeniably, UKIYO is our most anticipated collection to date, capturing the true essence of St. Agni. We cannot wait to share it with the world.
